Lucas immigrated to South Carolina around 1786, which proved a fortuitous time and place for the arrival of a talented young millwright.

The firm developed into the premier architectural, engineering, and planning concern in South Carolina and the Southeast by the late 1950s and remained so well into the 1970s.

Lyman became a battleground mill during the General Strike of 1934. Because the mill was neither strongly pro-nor anti-union, it served as a crucial site for both sides of the labor dispute.

Manigault rose from modest origins to become the leading merchant and private banker of colonial South Carolina.

Most of what is known about Manigault comes from a letter she wrote from South Carolina to her brother in Europe.

Although Manigault did not actively practice law, his legal training enabled him to pursue a political career, collect debts owed to London merchants, and manage the South Carolina business and plantation interests of absentee landowners.

Following the war, Manning and the surrounding countryside returned to their economic mainstay—agriculture—and the town prospered.

Manning envisioned an expanded government role in confronting the problems facing South Carolina.

Marion County was named to honor General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero whose camp was hidden deep in its swamps.

Completed in 1841, Market Hall was one of several monumental buildings that arose along Meeting Street in Charleston during the 1830s and early 1840s.

Marlboro County was formed on March 12, 1785, and named for John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough.

During the early twentieth century Mauldin thrived as an agricultural community, with local cotton shipped to outside markets from its train depot.

Maverick’s most lasting legacy is the application of his name as a term for unbranded cattle, which was inspired by his unbranded herd on Matagorda Peninsula. Legend has it that he refused to brand his calves because he thought that allowed him to claim all unbranded calves on the range.

Maybank’s involvement with Santee Cooper enhanced his political standing, and he ran successfully for governor in 1938.

Along with his interest in manufacturing and merchandising, McBee became one of the strongest promoters of railroads for the upstate in the 1830s.

While McColl became a transportation, ginning, and marketing center for eastern Marlboro County farmers, the establishment of McColl Manufacturing Company in 1892 supplied additional growth. By 1896 this mill processed fifty bales of Marlboro County cotton daily and employed three hundred workers, who lived in cottages erected on mill land.

McColl, known for his tough management style and outspoken nature, was also an active supporter of Charlotte’s development. He was the first chairman of the Charlotte Uptown Development Corporation, which coordinated business interests to finance major redevelopment of the central city.

The settlement that developed near mines was known initially as Dorn’s Gold Mines and later as Dorn Mine Post Office. In 1871 Cyrus McCormick bought the mines for $20,000 and spent the remainder of his life trying to realize a profit, despite extensive capital outlays for new mining equipment. However, McCormick did give the town an orderly shape and the area a new economic prosperity that ultimately led to a new county.

In 1941 the Palmetto State Teachers’ Association commissioned McKaine to conduct a survey of the salary disparities between white teachers and black teachers. He was instrumental in devising the “Teachers’ Defense Fund,” which collected money to finance the subsequent equal pay litigation. McKaine also was deeply involved in consultations with Thurgood Marshall, the chief national legal counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
