Colonial Period (1670-1764)

Huger represented St. George’s Dorchester Parish in the Jacksonborough Assembly in January 1782 and served in the legislature until his election as sheriff of Charleston District in 1785. Familial ties led to his appointment as the first federal marshal for South Carolina in 1789, a position which he held for five years.

Hume returned to Charleston in late 1747, convinced of the need to warn her neighbors and others of their erring ways. She spent the rest of her life inspiring others through her religious writings and dedication to the Quaker faith.

Taking his seat on January 27, 1797, Hunter served in the U.S. Senate until November 26, 1798, when he resigned and returned to his agriculture pursuits. He served as a presidential elector for the George Washington–John Adams ticket in 1792 and for the Thomas Jefferson–Aaron Burr ticket in 1800.

In addition to economic motives, indigo production also succeeded because it fit within the existing agricultural economy. The crop could be grown on land not suited for rice and tended by slaves, so planters and farmers already committed to plantation agriculture did not have to reconfigure their land and labor.

Before returning to South Carolina, Izard visited General George Washington’s headquarters and successfully lobbied for the appointment of Nathanael Greene as commander of the Continental army in the Southern Department.

James gained his first military experience as a captain in the provincial militia during the Cherokee War (1759–1761).

Jasper became a national hero as a character in the historical novel by Mason L. Weems, The Life of Gen. Francis Marion (1809).

On August 18, 1775, at twelve o’clock noon, Jeremiah was brought before the gallows in Charleston. Before the noose could be tightened around his neck, he proclaimed his innocence and told his accusers that “God’s judgment would one day overtake them for shedding his innocent blood.”

The present church was built in 1822–1823 under the leadership of Pastor Elipha White. It bears many similarities to Episcopal churches, including clear glass windows with semicircular windows above.

Like many proprietary governors, Robert Johnson struggled to balance proprietary demands with political realities in South Carolina.

As a friend of the government, Johnson’s career became embroiled in the hothouse politics of late-seventeenth-century England and his actions rarely escaped suspicions of ulterior motives.

Henrietta Dering painted pastel portraits, mostly of members of her husband’s extended family, which included such noted individuals as the Earl of Barrymore and Sir John Percival (later the Earl of Egmont).

His business operations expanded to include a large flour and grist mill, indigo works, a warehouse, a brewery, and a distillery. He and his partners also acquired grants for several thousands of acres of land across the colony. In 1769 Kershaw played a lead role in convincing his Pine Tree Hill neighbors to lay out a series of streets and lots, which became the town of Camden.

During the Charleston smallpox epidemic of 1738, after one of his children died of the disease, he became one of the foremost champions of the controversial new practice of inoculation.

He was knighted and received a landgraveship in Carolina, which entitled him to twelve thousand acres in the fledgling province. The Lords Proprietors commissioned Kyrle governor of Carolina on April 29, 1684.

Lamboll contributed to the establishment and advancement of scientific gardening in colonial South Carolina.

The granting of large estates to titled aristocrats was important in setting a tone for the colony, but the granting of lands by “headrights” to the commoners was much more important.

At least twenty-six landgraves and thirteen cassiques were created by the Lords Proprietors, with rights to land totaling 1,364,000 acres.

Laurens has been frequently cited by historians as one of the few citizens in the lower South who expressed opposition to slavery in America as early as the 1770s.

After the British shifted military operations to the South, Laurens proposed that South Carolina arm slaves and grant them freedom in return for their military service.
