Colonial Unrest, American Revolution, and New Republic (1765-1789)

During his later years Middleton, a major slaveholder, was obligated to manage the rice plantations that provided the family’s income.

From 1822 to 1828 Miller was a member of the South Carolina Senate and an early leader in the movement toward nullification.

Mills defined both his personal and public ambition in an 1808 letter to Jefferson, in which he declared his desire to pursue “the honour and benefit of my country.”

Montagu convinced several Carolinians that “it was not impossible for a Man to be too great a Fool to make a good Governor.”

Moore’s argument persuaded the Grand Council, which rejected Morton and backed Moore as governor on a temporary basis. The Lords Proprietors, who now courted the Goose Creek Men in the name of colonial harmony and a desire to establish the Church of England in South Carolina, supported the elevation of Moore (an Anglican) over Morton (a Dissenter).

In May 1781 patriot commanders Francis Marion and Henry Lee decided that they would have to burn the house to get the British outpost to surrender. Rebecca Motte gave her consent to the plan and even provided the arrows used to set fire to the roof.

Ordered to Sullivan’s Island, the Second South Carolina was the principal command in the island’s half-completed palmetto log and sand fort, and the regiment’s colors served as the garrison’s flag.

He served as physician to St. Philip’s Parish hospital (part of the city’s poorhouse) and as a quarantine officer for the province. He was also president of the Faculty of Physic, a body established in May 1755 to advance the professional standing, interests, and income of Charleston’s medical men.

Moultrie’s political life began when the governor appointed him a justice of the peace in 1756. During the French and Indian War, he joined the militia and rose to the rank of major.

Moultrie achieved national fame on June 28, 1776, when he successfully defended Fort Sullivan against a British attack and saved Charleston from capture. Other units contributed to the defense, but it was the famous palmetto-log and sand fort and Moultrie’s command of four hundred men and thirty cannons that became forever associated with the victory.

New Windsor was among the least populous of the 1730s townships and by 1756 had an estimated population of only three hundred. Its reputation for an unhealthy climate and poor land further slowed its development.

The question of independence deeply divided the inhabitants of the district. For many colonists, land grants and protection from Indian incursions created strong devotion toward Great Britain.

An ardent proponent of states’ rights, Noble advocated public resistance to the expansion of federal power, which he deemed “highly dangerous, and subversive of our excellent frame of Government.”

Omar was one of many African Muslims who were captured and taken to the Americas but whom have not been adequately studied. Unfortunately, there are no details on his capture; many Muslim Fulbe believe that you do not retell the story of difficult times if you want Allah (God) to give you blessings for that suffering.

On August 30 the patriot force took position in the thick woods of a swamp about forty yards from the road and within a mile of Parker’s Ferry. A few light horsemen were sent forward as decoys. As the British force approached in the late afternoon, a Tory sentry noticed a white cockade—the mark of Marion’s men—in a soldier’s cap in the woodline.

Several factors have been attributed to partisans’ successes. Chief among them was their mobility as they were by and large inseparable from their horses. Although serious fighting was done dismounted, they were able to ride swiftly into and out of conflict and harass the enemy whenever and wherever possible.

During the Revolutionary War, Pickens became one of the most significant leaders of patriot forces in the South Carolina backcountry.

Pickens’s political career began at the local level, where he served in minor public posts, such as commissioner for building the Pendleton District courthouse (1806) and commissioner of the Pendleton Circulating Library Society (1808–1814).

In Congress, Pinckney quickly made a name for himself. He became friends with James Monroe and served with the Virginian on a committee responsible for presenting Thomas Jefferson’s ordinances regarding the Northwest Territory.
