In essence, the law guaranteed at least a seven-month school term for all white children. Additionally, it shifted the financial responsibility away from local districts, which often lacked resources, to the state.

Although removed from the fighting during the Civil War, Abbeville nevertheless played a noteworthy role in the conflict.

Advocating “the Gospel of Freedom,” African Methodist ministers have played important roles as secular leaders.

The Zion Church expanded in decades during and after the Civil War, with the inclusion of many southern blacks, mainly freed people.

Following her graduation in 1894 from the Women’s Medical College of the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1891, Allan returned to Charleston and participated in the first sitting of the South Carolina Medical Board, the only woman to do so.

The productive presidency of David Henry Sims, an Oberlin graduate and a future AME Church bishop, developed Allen University into a full fledged seat of learning.

Allen’s poetry combines contemporary philosophical concerns with a format more aligned with earlier poetic styles.

Although Allen spent only six of his sixty years in the state, his association with the Poetry Society of South Carolina came at a crucial time in his development as a writer.

Working closely with corrections agencies at both the state and federal levels, the Alston Wilkes Society serves thousands of people every year. It offers statewide city court mediation, counseling, and employment services for offenders/ex-offenders and the homeless. The society also operates adult halfway houses, veterans’ homes, and youth homes.

Anderson College began offering upper-level undergraduate classes in 1991 and in 1993 again awarded bachelor’s degrees. In 2006, the school officially changed its name to Anderson University. In 2013, Anderson's College of Visual and Performing Arts was renamed the South Carolina Schools of the Arts.

Beginning in the 1920s, art has had a significant economic impact by virtue of its role in fostering tourism and later through museums dedicated to art.

In 1782 the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in the United States was organized in Philadelphia. The Associate Reformed Synod of the South, later called the General Synod, was organized in 1803 and became known as the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

In 1917 Avery became a bulwark for the establishment of the city’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Babcock’s writings continued their popularity years after his death. A reviewer from the New York Times once compared his writing to “a rare old Bourbon you want to make last as long as possible.”

In 1891 Babcock became superintendent of the South Carolina State Lunatic Asylum in Columbia, its first to have been trained in psychiatry. Babcock arrived eager to modernize and improve the institution.

Bachman consistently presented a sound scientific case for all races of humans as members of the same species. Drawing on his keen knowledge of the nature of species, he presented his argument in numerous articles and in The Doctrine of the Unity of the Human Races, Examined on the Principles of Science, published in 1850. Yet Bachman condoned slavery, and he was an unyielding defender of states’ rights.

During her accomplished career as a children’s librarian with the New York Public Library, Baker received the first Dutton-Macrae Award in 1953 for advanced study of library work with children. In 1980 Baker joined the University of South Carolina (USC) and became “Storyteller-in-Residence.” This position was created for Baker, and her goals were to teach others how to create enthusiasm in children about stories and reading.
