Here, Carolina fur traders awaited them to receive payment on trade items sold to Indians the previous year on credit. Current purchases from the traders were made on credit to be paid for with the next season’s hunt.

In addition to economic motives, indigo production also succeeded because it fit within the existing agricultural economy. The crop could be grown on land not suited for rice and tended by slaves, so planters and farmers already committed to plantation agriculture did not have to reconfigure their land and labor.

The textile industry was the most significant early industry to take root in the upcountry and Piedmont regions of South Carolina. Some New England manufacturers saw potential for factory operations along the backcountry rivers and set up a handful of small mills there after 1814.

Returned in 1888 and 1890, Irby was unanimously elected Speaker of the House in 1890. During this time, Irby and others persuaded Benjamin Tillman to come out of his self-imposed retirement and lead the reform movement initiated by the Farmers’ Alliance as a challenge to conservative control of the Democratic Party.

Before returning to South Carolina, Izard visited General George Washington’s headquarters and successfully lobbied for the appointment of Nathanael Greene as commander of the Continental army in the Southern Department.

Jackson’s popularity among the masses, his strong personality and leadership, and his underappreciated political skills redefined and strengthened the presidency during his two terms.

The Jacksonborough Assembly’s most important work was its decision to confiscate Loyalist estates.

James gained his first military experience as a captain in the provincial militia during the Cherokee War (1759–1761).

English and Scots settlers arrived in the region in the late 1600s, where they withstood Spanish attacks and the Yamassee War of 1715 to prevail and lay the foundation for future settlement.

In the S.C. Senate, Jefferies quickly attained power and influence. He became part of the loose coalition of fiscally conservative lowcountry legislators known as the “Barnwell Ring.”

On August 18, 1775, at twelve o’clock noon, Jeremiah was brought before the gallows in Charleston. Before the noose could be tightened around his neck, he proclaimed his innocence and told his accusers that “God’s judgment would one day overtake them for shedding his innocent blood.”

After the Civil War, he represented Union as a delegate to the 1872 Taxpayers’ Convention and in the S.C. Senate from 1872 to 1882. From 1877 to 1880, he was elected president pro tempore of the Senate.

Johnson attributed his stature as a jurist as based on “a well founded knowledge of the general principles of law, and a sound discretionary judgment in their application with the honest purpose of attaining the truth.”

Johnson served only one term in the legislature. Subsequently she was a Methodist missionary for three years, teaching home economics to women in India.

Throughout his career Johnson remained active with various other endeavors. He has been a long-standing member of the board of trustees at Benedict College.

Like many proprietary governors, Robert Johnson struggled to balance proprietary demands with political realities in South Carolina.

As a friend of the government, Johnson’s career became embroiled in the hothouse politics of late-seventeenth-century England and his actions rarely escaped suspicions of ulterior motives.

On March 22, 1804, Johnson became the first Democratic- Republican to be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Defeating his one-time hero Cole Blease, Johnston was elected governor in 1934. “This marks the end of ring rule,” Johnston declared at his January 1935 inauguration.

Following a model that is present in every state, the South Carolina judicial system is now structured hierarchically. The two highest courts are both appellate bodies, meaning that they almost exclusively adjudicate cases that have been referred to them from lower courts.
