As a native and a Republican who seemed continually to be seeking elective office, Mackey came to be regarded by many in the state as little more than a scalawag opportunist. He was, however, seriously involved in trying to maintain and even strengthen the Republican organization.

A cooperationist earlier in his career, Magrath supported secession by 1860, feeling “an assurance of what will be the action of the State.”

Known for his temper, Maham once forced a deputy sheriff to eat and swallow a summons the latter was trying to serve on him.

Manchester State Forest includes several historical sites, including Bellfield, the home of Richard I. Manning, governor of South Carolina from 1915 to 1919. Except for salaries of forest workers, Manchester is completely self-supporting.

Manigault brought to Charleston an architectural conception that bridged the Anglo-Palladianism of the mid–eighteenth century and the emergence of the Greek revival in the 1820s.

Manigault rose from modest origins to become the leading merchant and private banker of colonial South Carolina.

Although Manigault did not actively practice law, his legal training enabled him to pursue a political career, collect debts owed to London merchants, and manage the South Carolina business and plantation interests of absentee landowners.

Mann was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and served from 1969 to 1979. His most notable service was as a member of the Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of Richard Nixon.

Manning had a particular fondness for South Carolina College, his alma mater and a place he equated with conservative instruction and order.

In 1822 Manning entered politics by securing election to the state House of Representatives from Clarendon. He served until December 1824, when he resigned his seat following his election as governor.

Manning envisioned an expanded government role in confronting the problems facing South Carolina.

The Marine Anti-Britannic Society faded from prominence after Gillon lost a bitterly contested election for intendant (mayor) of Charleston in 1784.

After the war a penniless Marion, whose plantation had been ruined, was awarded a gold medal, a full Continental colonelcy, and command of Fort Johnson in Charleston harbor.

Maroon activities and slave uprisings were the most militant form of black resistance to slavery, although historians have paid little attention to the history of maroons in the United States.

After Lee’s death an intense legal battle ensued among the elite of the South Carolina Bar to settle the estate. To contest the will, the heirs at law employed James R. Ervin, Abram Blanding, and William Harper, three of the state’s most prominent lawyers.

As a delegate, Mathews served on several important committees, including as chairman of the Committee at Headquarters, which worked closely with General George Washington to supply and organize the army.

Maverick’s most lasting legacy is the application of his name as a term for unbranded cattle, which was inspired by his unbranded herd on Matagorda Peninsula. Legend has it that he refused to brand his calves because he thought that allowed him to claim all unbranded calves on the range.

Maybank’s involvement with Santee Cooper enhanced his political standing, and he ran successfully for governor in 1938.

A political conservative, McCrady espoused limiting political participation by blacks and poor whites, leaving the levers of gov- ernment firmly in the hands of a white elite. Elected to the S.C. House of Representatives, he represented Charleston County from 1880 to 1890.

McDuffie gained national attention during the nullification crisis. He believed nullification to be a legitimate extraconstitutional measure with secession as its logical conclusion. His fiery speeches in support of nullification, and their appeal among South Carolina voters, may have forced Calhoun to realize that his state and many of its politicians were more radical on the issue than he was.
