They organized the thousand-acre agricultural tract into broad curves with axial streets and boulevards, planting hundreds of closely spaced trees to transform open fields into sheltered grounds.

The South Carolina portion of the waterway extends for 203 miles and is dredged to an average depth of between nine and eleven feet. While recreational users of the Intracoastal Waterway abound, the route also carries a substantial amount of commercial cargo traffic.

In the late 1920s the South Carolina Natural Resources Commission began a public relations campaign to advertise the high iodine levels found in fruits and vegetables grown in the state. Even South Carolina milk was promoted as containing extraordinarily high levels of iodine.

The immediate goal of the organization was to “to provide annual financial support to the athletic department at Clemson and to assist in every way possible to regain for Clemson the high athletic standing which rightfully belongs to her.”

The Lake Murray Dam project of the late 1920s brought more than four thousand workmen, creating an unexpected economic boom. It also transformed the region into a recreational mecca for fisherman, water sports enthusiasts, and others mesmerized by the beauty of an enormous, man-made lake covering nearly eighty square miles.

Irvin was best known for his residential designs. He catered to affluent clients, including many wealthy northerners who bought former plantations for use as winter homes.

Jackson’s work earned her two Pulitzer Prize nominations and the award for National Conservation Writer of the Year. She also won an Alicia Patterson Fellowship to study the economics of southern Appalachia.

Jackson is frequently regarded among the greatest natural hitters of all time. He was one of the game’s first modern power hitters, always taking a full swing with his hands together and consistently hitting for power.

Jakes has been a lifelong devotee of local theater as an actor, director, and scriptwriter of dramas and musicals. He was an early and regular benefactor of the Self Family Arts Center on Hilton Head Island.

Despite his indisputable genius, Jamerson’s increasingly erratic behavior and drinking problems had lowered his standing with Motown by the 1970s.

Jeanes Teachers encouraged self-sufficiency. They taught students and their families to sew, bake, and do carpentry.

In the S.C. Senate, Jefferies quickly attained power and influence. He became part of the loose coalition of fiscally conservative lowcountry legislators known as the “Barnwell Ring.”

As many as five Jenkins Orphanage bands were on tour during the summers of the 1920s.

Jenkins’s greatest contribution to Charleston, however, was the founding of the Jenkins Orphanage.

Jenkins’s work as a bluegrass banjo pioneer became better known after Mike Seeger placed four of his numbers on the Folkways album American Banjo Scruggs Style.

When Jenkins saw the injustices that affected black children on Johns Island, he bused his children and others to public schools in Charleston.

The present church was built in 1822–1823 under the leadership of Pastor Elipha White. It bears many similarities to Episcopal churches, including clear glass windows with semicircular windows above.

Johns’s career falls into three broad periods: early work characterized by great detachment, abstract work from the early 1960s and 1970s that often emphasizes patterns, and imagery from the 1980s that is more personal and based on early recollections.

Johnson served only one term in the legislature. Subsequently she was a Methodist missionary for three years, teaching home economics to women in India.

In 1944 Johnson became the University of South Carolina’s resident architect, a position he held through 1956 that involved planning campus expansion and designing.
