For more than half a century Hovie Lister was leader and pianist for the Statesmen Quartet, one of the best-known and most significant exponents of southern gospel music.

Littlejohn was serving his seventeenth year as circuit court judge when a vacancy occurred on the supreme court with the death of Chief Justice Claude A. Taylor in January 1966.

Lunz joined the staff of the Charleston Museum in 1933 and worked primarily on invertebrates and published papers, mainly on crustaceans.

Lynch is credited with discovering the first treatment for Granuloma inguinale, a venereal disease characterized by ulcerations of the skin of the external genitals.

During his first combat experience Mabry spearheaded a path through a minefield, captured or killed ten enemy soldiers, and directed a tank assault on enemy machine gun emplacements to open a path to the inland causeways. Soon after, he was one of the first from the seaborne invasion force to link up with troops of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division, who dropped behind enemy lines earlier that morning.

Mann was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and served from 1969 to 1979. His most notable service was as a member of the Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of Richard Nixon.

Manning envisioned an expanded government role in confronting the problems facing South Carolina.

Marion made his debut with the Cardinals on April 16, 1940, and was their regular shortstop from 1940 to 1950.

In 1927 Martin joined Norman Langley barnstorming as a flying circus. With Langley he performed in North and South Carolina. Martin also delivered movie film to theaters and in 1928 joined Anderson Airways, flying for Mabel Cody’s Air Circus.

In 1947 Marvin established a private practice in landscape architecture in the town of Walterboro, the county seat of his native Colleton County but far from urbanized areas where most landscape architects tended to congregate.

Maybank’s involvement with Santee Cooper enhanced his political standing, and he ran successfully for governor in 1938.

Early in life Mays developed an “insatiable desire” for education, but racial inequality and prejudice had severely handicapped his educational aspirations.

McCants’s literary output was never very prolific, undoubtedly due to his obligations as an educator.

McColl, known for his tough management style and outspoken nature, was also an active supporter of Charlotte’s development. He was the first chairman of the Charlotte Uptown Development Corporation, which coordinated business interests to finance major redevelopment of the central city.

Moving to Charleston in 1952, McCottry joined her husband, who established a general practice with obstetrics and gynecology services. He became chief of staff at the McClennan-Banks Memorial Hospital. The couple were Charleston’s first African American team of physicians, and she was the city’s first black woman to practice gynecology and obstetrics.

Although she spent the bulk of her adult life thinking of herself as a teacher and social worker, McCray was aware that she loved to write. She wrote, in fact, throughout the years of her higher education and her two marriages and child rearing. She did not start to think of herself as a professional writer until she reached the age of seventy-three, at roughly the same time she took up residence in Columbia.

McCray’s influence was felt beyond the newsroom in breaking new political ground for black South Carolinians. As cofounder in 1944 of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), the first black Democratic Party in the South, McCray joined those who protested the national Democratic Party’s tolerance of unfair treatment of black South Carolinians.
