Greenwood County

A staunch Democrat, from 1864 to 1866 Aiken represented Abbeville District in the S.C. House of Representatives. During Reconstruction, the link he had earlier made between southernism and agrarianism grew stronger.

Brown was among the most notorious Loyalist commanders in the South during the Revolutionary War. In one of David Ramsey’s histories of the war, Brown wrote an impassioned defense of his conduct in reply to charges of cruelty. Brown died on his St. Vincent Island plantation on August 3, 1825.

Burton is perhaps best-known for his monograph on President Abraham Lincoln. In The Age of Lincoln, Burton identifies Lincoln’s “southernness” as key to his affirmation of freedom and liberty for all.

As a congressman, Dorn established a record as a strong supporter of military and defense spending. He was also a champion of veterans and supported numerous legislative acts for their assistance.

He won a seat in the Provincial Congress in January 1775 and soon after sat on all important revolutionary committees. Drayton used his extensive powers to lead raids against the city’s royal post office and armories, thereby obtaining both crucial information regarding the intentions of the British Ministry and arms for the patriot forces.

It became a bustling railroad town, with passenger and freight trains steaming through a village served by three railroads by 1890. The Greenwood economy, based on agriculture and transportation, was altered dramatically in 1890 when William L. Durst opened the Greenwood Cotton Mill.

Greenwood escaped most of the ravages of the Civil War. While no armies plundered its towns and farms, many men entered Confederate service and no resident was spared the war’s economic dislocations.

In 1912 Hancock became the principal of Seneca Institute, a private coeducational school for African Americans in Oconee County. Stressing vocational education, this facility was modeled closely after Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

In 1904 Harley was elected to the South Carolina House from Barnwell County and served until 1908. In 1910, he was elected mayor of Barnwell, but he was forced to relinquish the position in 1918 because of a ruling that railroad lawyers could not hold public office.

Harper’s congressional career representing South Carolina lasted from 1794 until 1801.

After an initial career as a lawyer, Harry Legare Watson (1876–1956) of Phoenix, South Carolina, merged the two papers in 1919 and continued as owner and editor for the rest of his life.

Better known by his nickname “Hootie,” Johnson moved to Greenwood in 1943 when his father, an executive with Citizens and Southern National Bank, bought controlling interest of the Bank of Greenwood.

Although its students come from most states and many foreign countries, as its central mission Lander University continues to serve the South Carolina Piedmont.

At times referred to as Belfast and Londonderry, the 22,000-acre Londonborough Township was laid out on Hard Labour Creek in 1762.

Early in life Mays developed an “insatiable desire” for education, but racial inequality and prejudice had severely handicapped his educational aspirations.

The question of independence deeply divided the inhabitants of the district. For many colonists, land grants and protection from Indian incursions created strong devotion toward Great Britain.
