During the Revolutionary War, Pickens became one of the most significant leaders of patriot forces in the South Carolina backcountry.

Spanning the state in a broad northeast to southwest band, the Piedmont is the second-largest of South Carolina’s landform regions, encompassing 10,500 square miles, nearly one-third of the state’s total area.

James B. Duke planned the Piedmont and Northern (P&N) electric railway to assist in the industrialization of the Piedmont region of the Carolinas.

From its inception, residents of Promised Land exerted a significant influence over the political, economic, and social life of rural Abbeville and Greenwood Counties.

Typically, his writing concerned the flora and fauna of South Carolina, farming practices, and environmental issues. Rice served as chief game warden of South Carolina (1911–1913) and as an inspector for the U.S. Biological Survey (1913–1917). Among many groups and associations in which he was active were the Audubon Society, the American Forestry Association, and the Conservation Society of South Carolina.

There was often disagreement in a county about whether to set up or keep rural police. From its start in the 1900s, nearly to Home Rule in the early 1970s, rural police remained part of the law for select counties.

Of the eight canals planned, two were constructed on the Saluda River, enabling cotton from the backcountry to be transported to Charleston. The largest cotton mill in the state, the Saluda Factory, was built on the river in the 1830s.

Salvador was the first person of the Jewish faith elected to the South Carolina legislature, while the Jewish historian Barnett Elzas claimed that he was “the first Jew in America to represent the masses in a popular assembly.”

After winning awards for providing special textiles for the armed forces during World War II, Self established Greenwood Mills Inc., with offices in New York City, as his own selling house in 1946.
