Although Manigault did not actively practice law, his legal training enabled him to pursue a political career, collect debts owed to London merchants, and manage the South Carolina business and plantation interests of absentee landowners.

The Marine Anti-Britannic Society faded from prominence after Gillon lost a bitterly contested election for intendant (mayor) of Charleston in 1784.

In 1895 the Marine Hospital building was occupied by the Jenkins Orphanage, founded for black children in 1891 by the Reverend Daniel J. Jenkins, a black Baptist minister.

Maybank’s involvement with Santee Cooper enhanced his political standing, and he ran successfully for governor in 1938.

McCants’s literary output was never very prolific, undoubtedly due to his obligations as an educator.

McClennan served as director and surgeon-in-charge. He earned a reputation for running his hospital with an iron hand. He believed that “strict discipline” gave donors confidence in the management and the institution.

Ensconced in the intellectual and political world of Columbia, where her family lived between the South Carolina College and the State House, McCord published the essays in which she synthesized contemporary thought on the defense of slavery, women’s subordination, and political economy.

Moving to Charleston in 1952, McCottry joined her husband, who established a general practice with obstetrics and gynecology services. He became chief of staff at the McClennan-Banks Memorial Hospital. The couple were Charleston’s first African American team of physicians, and she was the city’s first black woman to practice gynecology and obstetrics.

A political conservative, McCrady espoused limiting political participation by blacks and poor whites, leaving the levers of gov- ernment firmly in the hands of a white elite. Elected to the S.C. House of Representatives, he represented Charleston County from 1880 to 1890.

Of McCrady’s taxa (scientific descriptions), two families, five genera, and thirteen species are valid today. McCrady’s detailed and clear descriptions and his excellent illustrations are especially notable. Widely recognized in his field, McCrady’s name is affixed to several species described by later zoologists.

McCray’s influence was felt beyond the newsroom in breaking new political ground for black South Carolinians. As cofounder in 1944 of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), the first black Democratic Party in the South, McCray joined those who protested the national Democratic Party’s tolerance of unfair treatment of black South Carolinians.

McGowan’s commitment to education was reflected in her other activities in public life. She became involved with the Commission on Interracial Cooperation in 1922 and served as chair of the commission’s South Carolina chapter through much of the 1920s and 1930s.

Since beginning his coaching career at Summerville High School, McKissick’s teams have won thirteen lower state titles and ten state championships. He has compiled more than six hundred victories, which surpasses by far the victory totals of all other football coaches at any division or level.

Except for the tragedy at Orangeburg in February 1968, McNair saw the state peacefully through the stormy times without yielding on major policy issues. Settlement of the Charleston strike without union recognition in 1969 and keeping USC open in 1970 without serious injury to students were foremost among many public demonstrations in the state in which his moderate leadership was credited with minimizing violence.
