Monroe has received numerous honors for her work, including the South Carolina Center for the Book Award for Fiction.

Montagu convinced several Carolinians that “it was not impossible for a Man to be too great a Fool to make a good Governor.”

As a recognized war hero and longtime leader in the antiproprietary party, Moore was chosen as provisional governor until England could assume control of the colony.

Moore’s argument persuaded the Grand Council, which rejected Morton and backed Moore as governor on a temporary basis. The Lords Proprietors, who now courted the Goose Creek Men in the name of colonial harmony and a desire to establish the Church of England in South Carolina, supported the elevation of Moore (an Anglican) over Morton (a Dissenter).

Moore oversaw each hospital in the South through personal and military correspondence and established large general hospitals, such as Chimborazo in Richmond. His greatest accomplishment might have been the vaccination of the entire Southern army against smallpox in only six weeks, a controversial decision in 1862.

In February 1865 the Columbia City Council appointed Mordecai “food administrator” to furnish sustenance to its starving citizens. Later that year he and twenty other community leaders were authorized to discuss South Carolina’s return to the Union with President Andrew Johnson.

In his capacity as state inspector, Moses performed scientific analyses of shipments of guano and other commercial fertilizers. He also developed a uniform statement of the chemical contents that explained in simple words the composition of a fertilizer that farmers could understand.

Ordered to Sullivan’s Island, the Second South Carolina was the principal command in the island’s half-completed palmetto log and sand fort, and the regiment’s colors served as the garrison’s flag.

Moultrie devoted the rest of his life to medical practice, medical education, organized medicine, and the community, becoming the most prominent South Carolinian in the medical profession during the nineteenth century

He served as physician to St. Philip’s Parish hospital (part of the city’s poorhouse) and as a quarantine officer for the province. He was also president of the Faculty of Physic, a body established in May 1755 to advance the professional standing, interests, and income of Charleston’s medical men.

Moultrie’s political life began when the governor appointed him a justice of the peace in 1756. During the French and Indian War, he joined the militia and rose to the rank of major.

Moultrie achieved national fame on June 28, 1776, when he successfully defended Fort Sullivan against a British attack and saved Charleston from capture. Other units contributed to the defense, but it was the famous palmetto-log and sand fort and Moultrie’s command of four hundred men and thirty cannons that became forever associated with the victory.

The profile of town residents became increasingly white, professional, and conservative. Indeed, South Carolina’s first Republican governor since Reconstruction, James B. Edwards, hailed from Mount Pleasant. However, Mount Pleasant’s rapid growth also sparked concerns over suburban sprawl and strip development.

Representing the ability of slaves and freed people to create cultural institutions under the most oppressive of conditions, Moving Star Hall continued to serve the people of Johns Island as a place of worship and a community center into the 1960s.

The two-story brick structure is laid in English bond with a molded brick water table. Its overall form has the squat profile typical of early Huguenot-influenced plantation houses in the lowcountry.

By December 1752 Musgrove secured peace between the Creeks and the Cherokees. The South Carolina legislature failed to pay Musgrove the money Glen had promised but did award her two pieces of land in Colleton County.

Nairne was Carolina’s first official Indian agent, employed at an annual salary of £250. As agent, Nairne traveled across the Southeast and conducted missions to southern tribes such as the Tallapoosas and Chickasaws.

Completed in 1808, it was built for Nathaniel Russell (1738–1820), a merchant who arrived in Charleston at the age of twenty-seven and quickly amassed a substantial fortune.

In 1720 Nicholson became the first royally appointed governor of South Carolina.

In 1990 Nielsen was elected the South Carolina superintendent of education on the Republican ticket, the first woman to hold that position and the second woman in the state to be elected as a constitutional officer.
