In 1900 the county produced 65,000 bales of cotton on 118,000 acres of land, and in 1918 Orangeburg was the nation’s second ranking county in cotton production. However, shared attachment to cotton production did not create unity among blacks and whites.

The shooting occurred after three nights of escalating racial tension over efforts by South Carolina State students and others to desegregate the All Star Bowling Lanes. On Monday night, January 29, 1968, six black students entered the bowling alley.

In the disputed election of 1876, Patterson supported the Republican claimants to election, unlike South Carolina’s other Republican senator, the conservative Thomas J. Robertson.
