During his first combat experience Mabry spearheaded a path through a minefield, captured or killed ten enemy soldiers, and directed a tank assault on enemy machine gun emplacements to open a path to the inland causeways. Soon after, he was one of the first from the seaborne invasion force to link up with troops of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division, who dropped behind enemy lines earlier that morning.

Known for his temper, Maham once forced a deputy sheriff to eat and swallow a summons the latter was trying to serve on him.

Mann was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and served from 1969 to 1979. His most notable service was as a member of the Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of Richard Nixon.

In 1895 the Marine Hospital building was occupied by the Jenkins Orphanage, founded for black children in 1891 by the Reverend Daniel J. Jenkins, a black Baptist minister.

Marion County was named to honor General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War hero whose camp was hidden deep in its swamps.

After the war a penniless Marion, whose plantation had been ruined, was awarded a gold medal, a full Continental colonelcy, and command of Fort Johnson in Charleston harbor.

Marlboro County was formed on March 12, 1785, and named for John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough.

In 1927 Martin joined Norman Langley barnstorming as a flying circus. With Langley he performed in North and South Carolina. Martin also delivered movie film to theaters and in 1928 joined Anderson Airways, flying for Mabel Cody’s Air Circus.

As a delegate, Mathews served on several important committees, including as chairman of the Committee at Headquarters, which worked closely with General George Washington to supply and organize the army.

At the onset of the Revolutionary War, McCall was selected as commander of one of three companies of patriot militia formed in the Long Cane area. He commanded his company in the stand against the Loyalists at Ninety Six in November 1775 and was selected the following summer to command a detachment in a covert mission to capture a party of Tories in the Cherokee country.

A political conservative, McCrady espoused limiting political participation by blacks and poor whites, leaving the levers of gov- ernment firmly in the hands of a white elite. Elected to the S.C. House of Representatives, he represented Charleston County from 1880 to 1890.

Of McCrady’s taxa (scientific descriptions), two families, five genera, and thirteen species are valid today. McCrady’s detailed and clear descriptions and his excellent illustrations are especially notable. Widely recognized in his field, McCrady’s name is affixed to several species described by later zoologists.

In 1960 the air installation was briefly renamed the Congaree Air National Guard Base, but on October 16, 1961, its name was changed to McEntire Air National Guard Base to honor Brigadier General Barnie B. McEntire, the South Carolina Air National Guard’s first commander, who had been killed in an air accident in May 1961.

Except for the tragedy at Orangeburg in February 1968, McNair saw the state peacefully through the stormy times without yielding on major policy issues. Settlement of the Charleston strike without union recognition in 1969 and keeping USC open in 1970 without serious injury to students were foremost among many public demonstrations in the state in which his moderate leadership was credited with minimizing violence.

Active in the South Carolina militia, he achieved the rank of brigadier general. After serving a single term in the state House of Representatives from 1844 to 1845, Means established himself as one of the leading fire-eaters in the South Carolina upcountry and vocal advocate of secession, a position put forth as a delegate to the Nashville Convention in 1850.

Eight South Carolinians were awarded the medal during World War I, including three who made the supreme sacrifice. Six recipients were members of the 118th Infantry, which received more Medals of Honor than any other regiment in the American Expeditionary Forces.

The roots of the Mexican War can be traced to westward expansion following the War of 1812. Many Americans, including many South Carolinians migrating west in search of cheap land, settled in northern Mexico where liberal land grants of as much as four thousand acres were available.

Middleton emerged as a leader within the extreme faction of the local “patriot party” by organizing and leading raids on the royal armories, and more.

Military education has long been popular in the American South, and South Carolina has been a leader for this type of instruction.

When the colonists set foot in South Carolina in 1670, they brought with them the traditional English concept of a militia, the idea that every citizen had a duty to assist in the defense of the community.
