Richardson taught herself to paint while growing up, eventually settling on birds as the primary subjects of most of her works. She received permits to create a wildlife sanctuary on James Island, South Carolina, where she rehabilitated birds and other wildlife and used them as models for her paintings.

Rogers publicized his success in area newspapers and encouraged others to plant tobacco. He recruited young men from the North Carolina–Virginia tobacco belt to advise and instruct novice growers in cultivating and curing the new crop.

As the title of his 1918 memoir suggests, Rutledge took life at Hampton as his literary subject, but to his national audience he spoke as the ambassador for an increasingly anachronistic Deep South.

The Sandhills are gently rolling hills that form the uppermost portion of the coastal plain in South Carolina. They continue beyond South Carolina westward into Georgia and northward into Virginia.

Established in 1942, Santee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was created to alleviate the loss of natural waterfowl and wildlife habitat caused by the construction of hydroelectric projects on the Santee and Cooper Rivers.

The Santee flows southeast and meets the Atlantic Ocean between the cities of Georgetown and Charleston. Near its mouth, the river forms a delta created by the large amount of sediment picked up by the waters of the Santee and its tributaries as they pass from origins in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina through the Piedmont of North and South Carolina.

Scarborough moved to South Carolina, arriving in 1836 in Charleston, where he would have faced competition with well-established painters. He spent the early years of his career as an itinerant, advertising in local newspapers and often staying with his clients while he painted their portraits.
