Reconstruction (1866-1877)

Of McCrady’s taxa (scientific descriptions), two families, five genera, and thirteen species are valid today. McCrady’s detailed and clear descriptions and his excellent illustrations are especially notable. Widely recognized in his field, McCrady’s name is affixed to several species described by later zoologists.

McGowan’s commitment to education was reflected in her other activities in public life. She became involved with the Commission on Interracial Cooperation in 1922 and served as chair of the commission’s South Carolina chapter through much of the 1920s and 1930s.

McKissick’s career in textiles began in 1899, when he began working as an engineer for the Pelzer Manufacturing Company, where his father-in-law served as president. In 1902 McKissick became president of Grendel Cotton Mills in Greenwood.

As a member of the House from 1892 to 1897, McLaurin increased his influence in state and national politics. On the national scene he was a strong advocate of free silver, frequently using his oratorical talents throughout the nation.

Inaugurated on January 16, 1923, McLeod took office amid a prolonged statewide agricultural depression. Despite the economic crisis, McLeod advocated increased legislative spending on public education. As governor, he signed the 6-0-1 Law, which guaranteed all children in South Carolina at least six months of schooling annually.

McSweeney’s tenure as governor was generally disappointing. He presided over the opening of the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition in Charleston, which failed in its design to revive the city’s status as a major Atlantic port. McSweeney also failed to convince the General Assembly to increase funding for public education.

After the Civil War he became a leader in reorganizing the denomination, calling for the 1866 meeting of the General Conference. At that meeting he was elected a bishop, and he increasingly became the chief spokesman for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Memminger’s skills were put to immediate use for the Confederacy, as he chaired the committee to draft the Confederacy’s provisional constitution. Jefferson Davis tapped him to be secretary of the treasury in 1861, a position in which Memminger would have enormous difficulties, some of which were beyond his control.

Mignot was one of the first tenants of the Tenth Street Studio Building, the earliest American facility designed specifically for artists.

Milburn was one of the New South’s most successful and prolific architects. He worked throughout the Southeast and designed more than 250 major buildings, primarily railroad stations and public, institutional, and commercial structures.

After secession, Miles was selected as a representative in the provisional and regular Confederate congress.

From his leadership at Howard and through his prolific writings, Miller became a national figure in the debate on race in America.

A loyal Republican and politically ambitious, Miller was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1874 and served until 1880.

Moise opposed secession and publicly argued against it. Nevertheless, when the Civil War came he volunteered for Confederate service.

An observant Jew, Moïse was an active member of Charleston’s Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue.

Montgomery played an important role in the development of upcountry mill villages with the construction of company housing, schools, and shops.

The South Caroliniana Library in Columbia has an unpublished manuscript on the evolution/creationism controversy written by Moore. Apparently written in 1923, about two years before the Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, and near the peak of the antievolution movement that erupted after World War I, Moore’s analytical examination of assertions made by antievolutionists has remained relevant long after his death.

Moore oversaw each hospital in the South through personal and military correspondence and established large general hospitals, such as Chimborazo in Richmond. His greatest accomplishment might have been the vaccination of the entire Southern army against smallpox in only six weeks, a controversial decision in 1862.

At the time of her marriage, Moragné began to question the propriety of writing romantic fiction, and much to the consternation of her publishers and some family members, she gave it up. She did, however, continue to produce poetry and articles of a religious nature

In February 1865 the Columbia City Council appointed Mordecai “food administrator” to furnish sustenance to its starving citizens. Later that year he and twenty other community leaders were authorized to discuss South Carolina’s return to the Union with President Andrew Johnson.
