The museum boasts individual works by such twentieth-century masters as George Bellows, Georgia O’Keeffe, Josef Albers, and Philip Guston. The collection includes forty works by Jasper Johns, sixty-eight by Stephen Scott Young, and twenty-six by Andrew Wyeth. A strong and varied exhibition program complements the museum’s collection.

Artifacts of South Carolina forest history are on display in and around Harbison headquarters. Among the exhibits are a working sawmill, a fire tower, a steam-powered log skidder, and a display of tools from the turpentine industry.

The immediate goal of the organization was to “to provide annual financial support to the athletic department at Clemson and to assist in every way possible to regain for Clemson the high athletic standing which rightfully belongs to her.”

The Lake Murray Dam project of the late 1920s brought more than four thousand workmen, creating an unexpected economic boom. In 1898 Long Island became Isle of Palms and began its modern transformation. Joseph S. Lawrence, a Charleston physician with money and an idea to make more, formed a company to construct a seaside resort with a boardwalk, amusement park, bathhouse, and dance pavilion to be connected to the city of Charleston by ferryboats and electric railways.

Jackson is frequently regarded among the greatest natural hitters of all time. He was one of the game’s first modern power hitters, always taking a full swing with his hands together and consistently hitting for power.

Jakes has been a lifelong devotee of local theater as an actor, director, and scriptwriter of dramas and musicals. He was an early and regular benefactor of the Self Family Arts Center on Hilton Head Island.

South Carolina has been home to an impressive number of nationally prominent jazz figures as well as the site of many high-caliber jazz activities, including major festivals, comprehensive jazz education programs, and even an award-winning radio show.

As many as five Jenkins Orphanage bands were on tour during the summers of the 1920s.

The joggling board is a tradition with a long history in South Carolina. While the origin of the joggling board has fallen into the murkiness of local legend, they were quite common on the coast by the 1880s.
