Spartanburg County won a major recruiting battle over BMW’s first non-Bavarian factory on June 23, 1992, when the company chose Greer over approximately 250 other localities around the world. BMW’s decision was hailed both locally and internationally as the crowning achievement of the South Carolina Piedmont’s campaign for international industrial recruitment.

At its peak the facility trained an estimated twenty thousand recruits every three months.

This site in Spartanburg County was one of sixteen chosen nationally as a U.S. Army training camp in the summer of 1917. It included two thousand acres on the western edge of Spartanburg.

Georgia Alden Cleveland kept a detailed dairy from 1890 to 1914 in which she chronicled life as an upper-class, married, southern white female.

The college opened its doors in the fall of 1890, enrolling 117 students. Unlike many southern women’s colleges, Converse offered students a course of study roughly equivalent to that offered by male colleges.

In addition to establishing one of the most important industrial enterprises in Spartanburg County, Converse contributed to the educational institution in Spartanburg that bears his name.

Near the end of his graduate program in 1992, Daniels declared himself a countertenor, a voice type most often associated with the castrati of the eighteenth century, although his sound is atypical of the modern countertenor’s male falsetto.

Although he learned some of Walker’s repertoire, Davis crafted his own style and is considered to be a progenitor rather than a follower of the “Piedmont” blues sound that developed in the Southeast.

Dent’s involvement in ATMI, as a member of the Commission on an All-Volunteer Army, and as a supporter of President Richard Nixon during his second presidential election gained him the recognition of the Nixon administration.

Dozier was one of six of its members to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for “Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty” in action near Montbrehain, France, October 8, 1918.

The main impetus for development in the area came when the Atlanta and Richmond Airline Railway began operations between Spartanburg and Greenville.
