Its sleek, vertical form represented the cutting edge of architectural design and added a sense of metropolitan sophistication to the skyline of South Carolina’s capital city.

Unable to join the racially segregated American Medical Association, five South Carolina physicians organized the Palmetto State Medical Association in 1896 as a vehicle to improve health care for African Americans and to graduate more medically trained professionals.

Serving in the Senate from 1873 to 1879, Patterson advocated stronger federal enforcement of Reconstruction measures and increased federal appropriations for the South. In the disputed election of 1876, Patterson supported the Republican claimants to election, unlike South Carolina’s other Republican senator, the conservative Thomas J. Robertson.

One of the singular accomplishments of Paul’s career was her idea to build a modern home in a rural community to offer blacks an opportunity to learn that they could afford modestly priced, yet comfortable homes. She played a key role in securing a grant from the General Education Board for the home’s construction.

In 1837 he received his ordination as a Lutheran minister, becoming the second African American to do so (the first being Jehu Jones, Jr., also a Charlestonian). Unable to find a Lutheran appointment, Payne eventually moved to Philadelphia, where contact with the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church led him to join its ministry in 1842.

In 1957 Peace was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of South Carolina. Posthumous honors included induction into the South Carolina Press Association Hall of Fame in 1981 and induction into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 1991.

In November 1862 Pember was approached by Mrs. George W. Randolph, wife of the Confederate secretary of war. She asked Pember to serve as matron in Chimborazo Hospital, a complex of military hospitals on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia.
