U.S. Civil War (1861-1865)

McSweeney’s tenure as governor was generally disappointing. He presided over the opening of the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition in Charleston, which failed in its design to revive the city’s status as a major Atlantic port. McSweeney also failed to convince the General Assembly to increase funding for public education.

After the Civil War he became a leader in reorganizing the denomination, calling for the 1866 meeting of the General Conference. At that meeting he was elected a bishop, and he increasingly became the chief spokesman for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Active in the South Carolina militia, he achieved the rank of brigadier general. After serving a single term in the state House of Representatives from 1844 to 1845, Means established himself as one of the leading fire-eaters in the South Carolina upcountry and vocal advocate of secession, a position put forth as a delegate to the Nashville Convention in 1850.

Memminger’s skills were put to immediate use for the Confederacy, as he chaired the committee to draft the Confederacy’s provisional constitution. Jefferson Davis tapped him to be secretary of the treasury in 1861, a position in which Memminger would have enormous difficulties, some of which were beyond his control.

Mignot was one of the first tenants of the Tenth Street Studio Building, the earliest American facility designed specifically for artists.

After secession, Miles was selected as a representative in the provisional and regular Confederate congress.

From his leadership at Howard and through his prolific writings, Miller became a national figure in the debate on race in America.

A loyal Republican and politically ambitious, Miller was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1874 and served until 1880.

Moise opposed secession and publicly argued against it. Nevertheless, when the Civil War came he volunteered for Confederate service.

An observant Jew, Moïse was an active member of Charleston’s Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue.

Montgomery played an important role in the development of upcountry mill villages with the construction of company housing, schools, and shops.

Moore oversaw each hospital in the South through personal and military correspondence and established large general hospitals, such as Chimborazo in Richmond. His greatest accomplishment might have been the vaccination of the entire Southern army against smallpox in only six weeks, a controversial decision in 1862.

At the time of her marriage, Moragné began to question the propriety of writing romantic fiction, and much to the consternation of her publishers and some family members, she gave it up. She did, however, continue to produce poetry and articles of a religious nature

In February 1865 the Columbia City Council appointed Mordecai “food administrator” to furnish sustenance to its starving citizens. Later that year he and twenty other community leaders were authorized to discuss South Carolina’s return to the Union with President Andrew Johnson.

In 1872, in spite of his notorious reputation for corruption, the Republican state convention nominated Moses for governor. About one-third of the Republican delegates bolted from the convention and instead supported the former Freedmen’s Bureau official Reuben Tomlinson.

In his capacity as state inspector, Moses performed scientific analyses of shipments of guano and other commercial fertilizers. He also developed a uniform statement of the chemical contents that explained in simple words the composition of a fertilizer that farmers could understand.

John Niernsee was the principal architect responsible for the design and construction of the South Carolina State House and had a significant influence on architectural practice in the state during the second half of the nineteenth century. His son Frank followed in his father’s footsteps by finishing the interior of the State House and operating a successful architectural practice in Columbia during the 1880s and 1890s.

First elected to the General Assembly from Newberry District in 1816, O’Neall served one term. He failed to win a second term in 1818 because he had voted to increase the salary of state judges.

Oliver is best known for a rescue mission he later founded in Columbia to serve as a refuge for homeless and troubled men. He purchased a lot at the corner of Assembly and Taylor streets in Columbia in 1888, for what became the Oliver Rescue Mission. The following year a gospel tabernacle was constructed.
