Haynsworth rose in South Carolina legal circles to become a federal appeals court judge, but he is best remembered nationally for his 1969 rejection by the U. S. Senate for a seat on the United States Supreme Court.

On April 14, 1948, he was appointed Director of the National Cancer Institute...Heller headed the institute for twelve years, a period in which federal financing for cancer research and treatment was greatly expanded.

Heller championed the desegregation of city hall and membership of municipal commissions, and the building of community centers. To provide more economical public transportation, he led the creation of the Greenville Transit Authority.

From 1934 to 1936 Hemphill was headquartered in Columbia, where he supervised several New Deal projects, among them the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), in which he produced measured drawings of Robert Mills’s Ainsley Hall House.

Ambrose Gonzales, founder and publisher of the State in Columbia, bought the indebted Herald in 1905 and hired Charles O. Hearon of Virginia as the editor. Hearon became influential in the state, campaigning for open city council meetings, a state highway system, and industrial development.

Hines was committed to racial and social justice and led the Episcopal Church into an era of social activism in the 1960s. He was supportive of ordaining women bishops, priests, and deacons, although that did not happen during his tenure as presiding bishop.

As chairman of the State Development Board from 1959 to 1963, Hipp was credited with major successes in recruiting industry to South Carolina. He was a mentor to several South Carolina business leaders and was singled out for his ability to build consensus from differing views.

In 1965 Hoechst came to Spartanburg in a joint venture with American Hercules company. The venture was created to provide polyester fiber for local textile producers.

A charismatic individual who never removed himself from the textile community, Hollis inspired countless anecdotes depicting self-effacing humor, his inspirational traits as educator, and his fundamental “faith in the common man.”

Holman enjoyed a lofty position among scholars of American literature. Embracing his southern roots and a sense of the tragic, he gave a major part of his scholarly effort to southern writing.

On March 29, 1916, after the return to Greenville, the school took the name Holmes Bible and Missionary Institute. For many years it operated on the “faith principle” whereby students did not pay set fees but whatever they could afford.

Holmes began to ponder Pentecostal experience when he read about hundreds receiving the gifts of the spirit at a revival in Los Angeles in 1906, and he began to identify himself as a Pentecostal after attending a revival meeting in West Union in 1907 at the urging of one of the students at his school.

As the town entered the twenty-first century, the Chiquola Mill continued as Honea Path’s largest employer. However, the town had diversified its economy somewhat.

By January 1887 Hover formed his own organization, the Co-operative Workers of America (CWA), in order both to achieve major reforms in labor laws and to establish cooperative stores.

As head coach, Howard directed the Clemson football program for the next thirty seasons (1940–1969), achieving a level of success that would not be surpassed at the school until the 1980s. Howard brought attention to the Clemson football program as much with his personality as with victories.

On June 6, 1944, Howie, a staff officer with the 116th, landed at Omaha Beach in the third wave of assault troops. Having survived the carnage of the invasion’s bloodiest beach, he and the men of the 116th spent the remainder of June and much of July fighting through Normandy’s hedgerow country in brutal close combat.

From its beginning, Hub City’s emphasis was place-based literature that encouraged readers to form a deeper connection with their home territory.

In 1963 she became the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Georgia. It was the first of many firsts for one of the nation’s groundbreaking minority journalists.

Her difficulties, as a southern African American woman attempting to adjust to northern urban life, prompted Hunter to open the Phillis Wheatley Home in 1913, named for the African American slave poet. A strong supporter of Booker T. Washington and his philosophy of industrial education, Hunter housed young black women in the Phillis Wheatley Home and trained them in various professions.
