To further attract industry, Daniel helped establish the State Development Board in 1945. Believing that South Carolina’s key industrial advantage was a union-free workforce, Daniel backed the state’s 1954 right-to-work law.

The isolated hills and hollows of Dark Corner were a haven for Confederate deserters during the war and in succeeding decades for countless illicit whiskey distillers.

Davenport considered himself a teacher foremost and his writings as “an extension of the classroom,” the creative component of a searching mind.

Forced to leave his native state, he later wrote the FBI that he fled South Carolina, “Not to escape justice, but to escape injustice.”

Dennis came to statewide attention in 1954 when—as a member of the State Democratic Party Executive Committee—he offered the motion to make Senator Edgar Brown the party’s candidate for the U.S. Senate after the unexpected death of the incumbent Burnet Maybank.

Dent’s involvement in ATMI, as a member of the Commission on an All-Volunteer Army, and as a supporter of President Richard Nixon during his second presidential election gained him the recognition of the Nixon administration.

He was a major influence in Thurmond’s switch to the Republican Party in 1964 and in shaping what became the Republican “Southern strategy,” a racial appeal to the segregationist inclinations of southern whites.

Deveaux and his Loyalist partisans are believed to have been responsible for burning the Prince William Parish church at Sheldon in April 1779. Deveaux was commissioned as a major in the South Carolina Loyalist militia known as the “Royal Foresters” and served the British army occupying South Carolina for the next three years.

He opposed federal minimum wage and child-labor laws, and his objections to the World War I bonus bill cost him support among veterans.

In 1968 Dickey was appointed the first Carolina Professor at the University of South Carolina and settled in Columbia, beginning thirty years of distinguished teaching there.

Among their many memorable sacred originals were “Wonderful Day” and “Not Turning Backward.” Lyrics that concerned life in the textile mills included “Weave Room Blues,” “Spinning Room Blues,” and “Weaver’s Life.”

Larry Doby was the first African American to play baseball in the American League and the second African American to manage a major-league team.

Its planes flew throughout the state and the Southeast, with some bombing practice centered on an isolated area below Caesars Head in the northern part of the county.

While the raid had no strategic value, it nevertheless gave the American nation a tremendous morale boost.

As a congressman, Dorn established a record as a strong supporter of military and defense spending. He was also a champion of veterans and supported numerous legislative acts for their assistance.

Dozier was one of six of its members to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for “Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty” in action near Montbrehain, France, October 8, 1918.

DuBose returned to South Carolina in 1931, receiving her M.A. in psychology from the University of South Carolina. After graduation, she taught history at USC, and was nearly fired from her position at one point for her then-controversial interest in African American history and culture.

Duke achieved his greatest professional fame by serving as lunar module pilot of Apollo 16 from April 16–27, 1972.
