Jenkins, Daniel Joseph

As many as five Jenkins Orphanage bands were on tour during the summers of the 1920s.

Jenkins took advantage of the growing popularity of jazz in London and played clarinet in dance orchestras to support himself while he continued his classical music studies.

Harleston was a founding member of the Charleston chapter of the NAACP in 1917 and served as its first president; by the 1920s he had also established a solid reputation as a portrait artist.

In 1895 the Marine Hospital building was occupied by the Jenkins Orphanage, founded for black children in 1891 by the Reverend Daniel J. Jenkins, a black Baptist minister.
