The North Island Lighthouse and keeper’s cottages can be seen in this early 20th century photo. The first lighthouse was built in 1801 on land that was given by Paul Trapier. During the Civil War, the lighthouse was used as a lookout for approaching Union troops. The lighthouse was burned during the war and the current lighthouse was built in 1867.
