The former summer home of Governor R. F. W. Allston appears on an 1846 plat of the Allston’s land, which at one time totaled 30 acres. Allston also built the South Causeway, just visible in this photo taken when the Atlantic Coast Lumber Company owned the house and 20 acres. Purchased in 1899 for use by ACL employees, the Allston house stands next to a second structure added to the north by ACL. Both were used to house company employees.
